DAY 1--JULY 4, 2021
Video: Note: NHK videos will be available on demand until 2 weeks after the end of the Basho. After that, they will be removed from the site. They are usually available for on demand viewing about 1 day after the matches. Note that "highlights" means complete full match video of all daily Makuuchi matches.

Day 1:
Japanese Sumo Association Youtube
JSA Youtube has offered 2 full matches on its Youtube channel. Hopefully they will do this every day. It is a live feed, no commentary, but it gives another perspective on these matches.
2. Enho (J5e) v Kotoshoho (J5w) (this is a Juryo (2nd Divsion) match. Both these Rikishi have been in the Makuuchi Division and are trying to get back to it. Kotshoho is in the blue belt.
Tachiai.org is following the Jonokuchi Division Basho of this Tournament. Jonokuchi is Division 6, the lowest division, non salaried. Today their Day 1 report linked to the first bout of the first day:
Shonanzakura (Jk24w) v Byakuen (Jk25w). These are the two lowest ranking Rikishi in all of Sumo. Shonanzakura is a 6 year veteran of Jonokuchi who has fought in 34 Basho, widely recognized as the worst Rikishi in Sumo. At present he has a 98 match losing streak. His overall record after today is 3-232-1 absence. He is 22 years old, 179 cm (5'10") 82 Kg (181 lbs). Byakuen, age 16, began his career today. He is 5'7" and 148 lbs. It was thought that Shonanzakura, with his height, weight, and experience, would have as good a chance as any to break his losing streak. But Byakuen was having none of it, getting his career off to a rousing start.

Notable:
For the first time in 16 months a Makuuchi (Top Division) Basho is being held outside of Tokyo. For the first time in a year, a Basho is being held with a Yokozuna participating. For the first time since last November a Rookie (Ichiyamamoto (sumowrestling.fandom.com)--M17e). , who came to Sumo from a Civl Service job after college--at an age slightly older (23+) than the Sumo rules allow. He began wrestling in 2017 and has been promoted to the Top Division on the back of consecutive 10-5 records in Juryo (2nd Division).
Hakuho returned to the dohyo (ring) with a victory over Meisei (K1w), a 9 second battle that he had to fight hard to win. The look on his face after it was over showed everyone what it meant to him.
And so there are stories at the bottom and top of the Banzuke (rankings). As well as the stories of the 3 Ozeki (Terunofuji [O1e], winner of 3 Basho in the last year, Takakeisho [O1w], winner of one and loser in a playoff), and Shodai, [O2e] winner of one). A Terunofuji win or even a loss with 13 or more wins, should be enough to promote him to Yokozuna. A major (15-0 or 14-1) win by Takakeisho might be enough to promote him to Yokozuna. As for Hakuho, he is looking for his 45th championship, by far the most in the history of the sport. But he is also looking for perhaps "respect" after missing 5 Tournaments and dropping out of the one before that, which caused consternation among the Sumo authorities. He is back to win, to show everyone that the Yokozuna is still the Yokozuna. All of these stories should be fascinating to watch,as they play out over the course of the next 2 weeks.
Quotable:
"I think Hakuho will return to his usual self if he can get through the early stages of the meet." Terunofuji was prevented from getting easy belt holds, but he kept his cool."
"We could not hold this tournament in Nagoya last year and caused you many troubles and anxieties. I'm as happy as can be to hold one for the first time in two years."
Japan Sumo Association President Hakkaku (Kyodo News)

Articles:
Nikkansports.com carries the most exhaustive coverage of Sumo that I have seen. It publishes multiple daily articles about the Basho.
All coverage is in Japanese and can be accessed from the Nikkansports Sumo Wrestling News Page. It can be easily (if not well) translated by Google Translate, which can be easily attached to your browser for seamless "translation." It is the next best thing to being able to read Japanese.
