About two weeks before every Basho (Tournament), rikishi (wrestlers--I hesitate to use the term "wrestler" as it does not really translate that way, and the rikishi do not like the term--see Sumo Pocket Guide, [Google Books preview] by David Shapiro, Foreward, P.2-3 and Chapter 2 for more on this) rankings are adjusted to reflect the results of the previous Basho. The rankings are carefully printed with a ritual caligraphy on a paper role by high ranking gyoji (referrees). The process can take up to a week. The result is called a banzuke (1) Wikipedia (2) (Archive.org) (3) (Le Monde du Sumo). Banzuke's have been a part of Sumo since the early 1760s. Originally they were done pictorially.
The March Basho (Haru) was covered in this blog post. The rankings help to set up the match ups for the next Basho. The next Basho was originally scheduled for May 10-24, but has been postponed. There is a good possibility it will be canceled. For English language updates on how that develops, two good sources are:
A. The Japanese Sumo Association (in English)
B. Chris Sumo's Youtube (in English), great short illustrated videos that give you the "inside scoop" as to the state of the sport, it's recent history, rikishi, etc. I find it an indispensable resource.
There are six major Bashos a year in Sumo, one in each odd numbered month. The May Tournament is known as the Natsu, (Summer) held at Ryokogu Kokugikan, Tokyo (1) (2). (1 and 2: Wikipedia). Three of the six tournaments are held there.
(The six major Tournaments are shown in the Japan Times Basho Reports section (in English). There is a subsection: "Sumo schedule" that shows the schedule for the present year and the year following.
This post will give the new Basho rankings. These are easily accessible from many sources. But the post will show you the upward or downward trend from the March (Haru--Spring) Tournament to the May Tournament. It will do this for both the Makuuchi (Top Tier) and Juryo (2nd Tier) Tournaments. These are the two highest and most professional rankings. It will also give the winners of the other three tiers and their movement up the ranks.
In addition, it will provide the highest career rankings for Maakuchi and Jurio tiers, as well as the results and rankings from the last 5 tournaments (in this case going back to the July 2019 Tournament.
A little background. For the Makuushi Tournaments, there are 4 major rankings.
These are the top ranked san'yaku (titleholder)
Yokozuna: (normally-2): (Top Ranked, cannot go down, retire instead--usually must win 2 consecutive Tournaments as Ozeki for promotion--72 Yokozuna since about 1750)
Ozeki: (normally-2) (usually must win 33 matches in 3 consecutive bashos as san'yako (each rikishi has 15 matches per Basho) to reach this rank. Poor performance (make-koshi [pronounced mockee-koshee]--losing tournament record) can begin the process of demotion.
These are the 2nd ranked san'yaku
Sekiwaki: (normally-2) (usually receive a promotion from the rank below with an 11-4 or better record, but there is leeway. In this Banzuke a rikishi from 2 ranks below was promoted to S with a 10-5 record. Make-koshi can lead to demotion.
Komusubi: (normally-2) (promotion rules vary, usually a hachi-koshi from a high ranked Maegashira will will get a promotion. Make-koshi can lead to demotion.
Maegashira: 18 ranks (normally 34 rikishi, as M18 is rare). Hachi-koshi (winning record) leads to improvement in M standing or promotion to K. Make-koshi leads to demotion in M or drop to Juryo.
Second Tier
Jurio: (normally 14 ranks--28 rikishi) Hachi-koshi by a high ranked Jurio can lead to promotion to Maegashira. Otherwise Hachi-koshi leads to improvement in Juryo standing. Make-koshi by a lower ranked Jurio can lead to demotion to Makushita (3rd Tier), which, in essesnce, is loss of full professional status.
In addition, within all of these ranks there are "East" and "West". East is considered a half rank above West. Yokuzuna East is "Grand Champion."
In other words there are 22 Top ranked tiers and 14 second ranked. For purposes of these rankings, I am including East and West as the same.
Here is another way to look at the ranking changes (From January-March-May Banzuke (Fredpink.com). The changes are shown graphically. A very interesting concept. (Added May 8, 2020)
Key to the rankings:
